Being raised on U.S.6 from our Frazier family homestead 5 miles East of Nappanee, the highway played a large part of our family's life. When it was first built, our farm was divided. My grandpa, Jess Frazier, & Cleo's family lived on the south side on the low ground. In 1933 my first cousins, Cecil & Ruth Frazier were killed as they walked home from our Grandmother's house. Their path was along the new highway. When they heard a truck approaching them from behind, they turned to see it. The truck driver did not have time to stop before he struck both children which killed them instantly.
The Dale Frazier family lived in the house on the hill. We witnessed many accidents & my parents would run to scene to see what was needed. This was pre 911 days. Some times they would die in my mother's arms. There were no ambulances back then either.
The accident I will always remember was when I was waiting for my school bus. It was too foggy for my bus driver to see a semi driving toward him as he crossed 6 to pick me up. After the crash electric wires were bouncing above my head. I was so scared I didn't even look when I ran across county road 15 to get back to my house & my mom.
I've seen U.S.6 on each coast & the midwest. It will always be a part of my life.

    1. Hi June, thanks so much for reading and commenting. Not everything about Route 6 is wonderful. There have been and continue to be tragedies on it across the country. But it really makes it more personal for me when I hear about experiences first hand from folks who have lived on it. Thanks so much for sharing your stories.
