Stay on Route 6

US Route 6 is the longest contiguous transcontinental route in the USA. Running from Provincetown, MA to Bishop, CA (and before 1964 to Long Beach, CA), Route 6 goes through 14 states. This is your guide along all of its original 3,652 miles. From Revolutionary War sites to pioneer settlements and western mining towns, Route 6 offers an in-depth lesson in US History, charms of yesteryear and comforts of modern times.

Dinner & A Movie: To Sir, With Love — Dinner & A Movie at The Columns (11 photos)

Volunteer "chef" Will Reeve spent days perfecting the Shepherd's Pie. Special thanks to Prime Time Meats for giving us a discount on the steak. There wasn't a single bite of leftovers!

We named the salad for one of the movie's main characters. Mr. Smarty Denham's salad and rolls were donated by Jorgenson's at the Dimmick. Thanks again for your continued support!

Museum Director and co-host lori made her version of "Bangers and Mash" for the UK themed dinner. Again, no leftovers to be found!

We adore museum member and supporter Pat Corchoran for many reason - her cookies are pretty high up on the list!

I’ve posted three sketches in a row (drawing was my first love) and this one is like a mirror image to the previous one. So, those that know me know that I’m not a Hawkeye fan (huge understatement, I know). I’ve been one of the biggest Cyclone fans since I was little. That being said I remember when the Hawkeye Nation lost Chris 20 years ago in a car accident and my heart hurt like the rest of the state when it loses one of its sons. So take note Hawk fans, here’s one of the few times you’ll see me create something Hawk friendly. It’s a tip of the hat to a great coach and a tribute to a great Iowa athlete taken too soon.

And Hawk fans...it’s not for sale. I’m not licensed to sell U of I merch. So, you can look but you can’t touch :)

We at the NNRY would also like to applaud a fellow railroad museum all the way in Roanoke VA, on their latest announcement involving a special locomotive.

We know here at the NNRY that it is not only rewarding when we fire up our old 93 and 40 as well as all our other pieces of equipment, but it is just as equally rewarding to see a piece of our history return to life again and that is exactly what is happening at the Virginia Museum of Transportation with the newly released website that is spreading the word and receiving donations to do tests on the only surviving N&W J class streamliner locomotive #611 to fire it back up to operations once more.

Congratulations, our whistles and bells ring for you, be sure to check out their website and to wish them congrats and blessings on this event http://fireup611.org/main/index.php

Be sure to stay tuned on our site too for more updates, and announcements! :)

The Norfolk & Western Class J Locomotives were a marriage of beauty and power. The teardrop nose, modern lines, graceful curves and deep-throated whistle combined with unbridled power to make the engine the iconic symbol of modern steam locomotives.
