Bill advances to restore U.S. 6 as Grand Army of the Republic Highway

US Route 6 was deemed "Grand Army of the Republic Highway" in 1953. Forgotten for so long, there seems to be new interest in its designation, as reported in THIS Desert News Utah article.

SALT LAKE CITY — A Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War wore an historic military uniform Friday to see the House Transportation Committee unanimously advance a bill restoring U.S. 6 as the Grand Army of the Republic Highway.

Eric Dan Richhart, secretary-treasurer of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Department of Colorado and Wyoming, told the committee he had been working to restore the Grand Army of the Republic designation for nearly a decade.

He said he backs HB396 as someone "wholly supportive of all things veterans and military."

The highway had been renamed in 2009 for a former Democratic leader in the Utah Senate, Mike Dmitrich. But it had already been designated to honor Civil War veterans nearly 70 years ago. Read the rest of the article HERE.

FYI From the Local Patch to All Route 6 Travelers

The Goat Trail, also known as Bear Mountain Bridge Road, which is also both US Route 6 and State Route 202, will be closed Tuesday through Thursday. Crews will be performing maintenance on the narrow, twisting road between Route 9D (at the Bear Mountain Bridge) and Route 9 (Annsville Circle).

The work is scheduled to be done from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily July 18 - 20, 2017. 

Follow the posted detour, but expect delays and plan accordingly.

For this month’s article, I perused my file of vintage photos of national banks for one that was both appealing and still standing. More often that not, an attractive national bank that existed in 1920 no longer stands in its small town. I was rewarded when I looked at Ashland, Neb., a town we will visit this month.

Ashland is a small city in Saunders County, smack-dab in the center of the eastern part of the state. Saunders County was established by an 1856 act of the Nebraska Territorial Legislature and later organized in 1866; its boundaries were redefined in 1858.

KANE — “Welcome to another almost perfect day on Gen. Kane's Summit, Pennsylvania.”

With those words, Dennis Driscoll of the Kane Historic Preservation Society summed up a glorious Saturday where people gathered from around the area in front of the old arch entrance to Dr. Edward McCleery's Wolf Farm along U.S. Route 6 in Hamlin Township to honor the man who saved the lobo wolf from extinction.

The state historical marker honoring McCleery, which was recently erected in front of the site located at 7840 U.S. Route 6, was dedicated on Saturday.

Land, ho! ... Or should that be, Whoa, land?

Officials in Wareham and Mattapoisett are on the hunt for the “disrespectful litterbugs” who allegedly abandoned a large motorboat on the side of the road this week.

The Wareham Harbormaster Department said in a Facebook post that at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday they observed a vehicle towing a boat along Route 6, heading into Marion from Wareham.

“A little out of the ordinary for this [time of] year but, hey, it happens,” the department wrote.

The harbormaster was not immediately available for additional comment.

Later Wednesday evening, the harbormaster department said, the Mattapoisett police received a tip that a boat had been left sitting on its side in a snowy embankment along the same stretch of road, miles away.

The department said the boat spotted in Mattapoisett “just so happens to match the one that we observed being towed.”

The two towns are roughly 16 miles apart, but accessible from Route 6.

Now, both departments are asking for the public’s help in locating the vehicle that left the boat washed up on shore. Details about the car in question were shared online.

“The track is still fresh and hunt is still on,” the harbormaster department wrote in a follow-up post on Facebook Thursday morning. “Now, let’s find the vehicle that was towing the boat!”

Vasquez Canyon Road is popular with cyclists, and provides additional access for drivers living in northern Santa Clarita areas -- such as Saugus -- and connects Bouquet Canyon Road to the 14 Freeway and Sierra Highway.
